Tartu County (Estonian: Tartumaa), is a county or maakond in the country of Estonia.
It is located in eastern Estonia bordering to Plva County, Valga County, Viljandi County and Jgeva County.
The area of Tartu County is 2,992.74 km, which covers 6.9% of the territory of Estonia. The population of the county is 148,992, which is 11.0% of the population of Estonia. The city of Tartu is the centre of the county located at a distance of 186 km from Tallinn. Tartu County is divided into 22 local governments 3 cities and 19 rural municipalities.
Geography
Tartu County lies in South Estonia, between Lake Vrtsjrv and Lake Peipsi. Tartu County is also situated at the crossing of the international routes St.Petersburg-Riga-Berlin and Stockholm-Tallinn-Pskov-Moscow. Estonia’s only navigable river, River Emajgi (100 km long), flows through the county, connecting Lake Peipsi and Lake Vrtsjrv.

Valga is a town in South Estonia and the capital of Valga County.
Valga and Valka town in the North Latvia are twin towns since 1920. The area of Valga is 16,5 km2 and that of Valka is 14,2 km2. Populations are accordingly 15 330 and 7100.
Valga is situated in the junction of roads and railways. Tallinn-Tartu-Riga railway is connected via Tapa with Tallinn-Narva-St.Petersburg magistral. Valga is an international junction of railway traffic. Since there is no railway station in Valka, the trains coming from Latvia are directed to Valga, which is the terminal of Latvian railway lines.
