Kladno : Czech Republic

Kladno is a city in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Its Czech postal code is 27200.

Kladno is the largest city of the region, together with its adjacent suburban areas forming an agglomeration of more than 110,000 inhabitants, situated in the close vicinity of Prague.

The first written evidence of Kladno dates back from the 14th century, in 1561 city rights were secured. Kladno was the historical birthplace of Bohemian heavy industries in the past. The mining industry began here in 1842. Proximity of Prague helped to keep local economy stable in spite of heavy industry decline after communist regime collapsed.

Anton Cermak, later mayor of Chicago, Illinois, was born here (as Antonn ?ermk) in 1873.

Petr Pithart, former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic was born here in 1941.
