Castelo Branco : Portugal

Castelo Branco is a city, a municipality and a district in eastern Portugal.

The city is made of one parish with the population of 31242, the municipality has 25 parishes and 56001.

The city itself is quite old and is named after its castle (now in ruins). Castelo Branco literally means White Castle.

The most important monument in Castelo Branco is the Jardim do Pao Episcopal (Garden of the Episcopal Palace). It is one of most beautiful baroque gardens in Portugal and contains statues of allegories, kings and zodiacal signs, arranged around ponds, terraces and staircases.

The district economy is based in the textiles in the Covilh area, pine forests (mainly around Sert) and food industries.

Amato Lusitano, a physician was born here in 1511.
