La Madeleine

Filed under:

One of the most familiar landmarks in Paris, La Madeleine has had a stormy history. Started in 1764 and later razed for the first time to begin a building modelled after the Pantheon. In 1814 Louis XVIII confirmed that the Madeleine should be a church. In 1837 the building was nearly selected for use as Paris’ first railway terminal. The church’s vicissitudes finally ended with its consecreation in 1842.
