Karlstad : Sweden

Karlstad Municipality [k???st??(d)] (pop. 82,000) is a municipality in mid-western Sweden with the city Karlstad (pop.53,000) as its seat. It has a university and a minor international airport.

Geography
The municipality has a varying terrain.

The city Karlstad is located at the northern shore of the largest lake in Sweden, Vnern. It has the second largest lake port in the country after Vsters.

Karlstad consists of islands and islets (see the illustration below).

History
On Karlstad’s largest islet, there was a place of counsel called Tingvalla in the medieval age, which had roots from the Viking Age before 1000 AD. It was also used as a market place. (See: Ting).

Karlstad was granted its city right on March 5, 1584 by the Swedish Duke Charles, who would later be crowned King Charles IX of Sweden. The city also derived its name from the King Karlstad literally means Karls city. The Duke also granted Karlstad the right as a governmental seat in the region, and gave it a substantial among of land.

Arvika Municipality is a Municipality in western Sweden, where the City Arvika is the seat with a population of 14,000. It is situated 80 km north-west of Karlstad. Geography The city Arvika is situated at Kyrkviken, a bay of Glafsfjorden, Swedens only inland fjord, a remnant of the ice age, when the area was close to the sea. The area is hilly with the highest hill Storkasberget close to the city. Arvika and its surroundings has good water infrastructure, and through a system of canals, lake Vänern can be reached, and from there Göta kanal opens a passage to Gothenburg and the sea. A

Söderköping : Sweden

Söderköping is a municipality in Östergötland County, in southeast Sweden. Covering an area of 671.9 km², the municipality has a total population of 13,936 (6,967 males and 6,969 females), giving a population density of 20.7 inhabitants per km². In 1595 the Riksdag of the Estates assembled at Söderköping and elected Duke Charles regent of Sweden in place of the Catholic Sigismund, who was king of both Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Söderköping stands at the eastern end of the Göta kanal, a 390-km long canal opened in 1832 to connect Gothenburg to the Baltic Sea by inland waterway.

Skara : Sweden

Skara is a Municipality in Västra Götaland County, in western Sweden. The municipality covers an area of 439.3 km². Of the total population of 18 305, 8 971 are male, and 9 334 are female. The population density of the community is 42 inhabitants per km². Skara was, according to local legend, founded in AD 988, making it one of the oldest cities in Sweden. At this time it was one of only two cities in what was to become Westrogothia, the other being Lödöse. In AD 1050 it became a bishop's see, which it remains to this day.
