Örebro : Sweden

Filed under:

rebro Municipality [r?’bru?] is a municipality in central Sweden where the City rebro is the seat of government.

History
The name rebro means (gravel) banks bridge, which was what rebro grew around and was named after. It is situated where the small river Svartn flows into the lake Hjlmaren.

The national diet meeting at rebro in 1810 elected Bernadotte king of Sweden as Charles XIV.

Although a trade town, rebro remained small until the second half of the 19th century, when it grew rapidly as a centre of the national shoe manufacturing industry (see: History of Nrke).

Sites of Interest
rebro Castle originates from the 13th century, when a watchtower was built in the centre of rebro to guard the bridge over Svartn. The castle was then gradually expanded upon.

rebro’s old town Wadkping is located on the banks of the Svartn. It hosts many 18th and 19th century wooden houses, along with museums and exhibitions.

The water tower of rebro, nicknamed Svampen (The Mushroom) is a popular destination as an outlook tower. In 1958, a replica of the tower was built in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
