Moinesti : Romania

Moine?ti is a town in Romania, Bac?u county. Population (1999) – 25,532.

The name is derived from the Romanian word “moin?”, which means a field that is left not cultivated for a year in order to improve the productivity the next year.

Moine?ti once had a large Jewish community; in Jewish contexts the name is often given as Mojnescht. The dadaist artist Tristan Tzara and Moses Rosen Chief Rabbi of Romanian Jewry from 19481994 were Moine?ti-born Jews.

History
1467 – First mention of Moine?ti.
1783 – Village Moine?ti is mentioned in Bawer’s map.
1832 – Moine?ti is for the first time mentioned as a market town. It had 188 houses and 588 inhabitants.
1921 – Moine?ti is designated a comun? urban? (with its own coat of arms and local administration, but a step short of being considered a municipality).
2001 – Moine?ti becomes a municipality.
